Mrs. Leila Austin – Provincial President 2005 – 2011
Leila Henrietta Austin was officially admitted into the Mothers’ Union in October of 1967, at her parish Church, St. Philip’s, in Georgetown, Guyana. She had, however, been attending MU meetings with her mother from the tender age of seven years Shortly after admission, she was elected branch leader, becoming the youngest member ever to be elected to that position in her parish.
After serving her full term in the position of branch leader she was elected Regional Officer of the Central Georgetown region – taking up the responsibility of coordinating the activities of the five branches within that region. She was later elected Vice President of the Diocesan Mothers’ Union and from there moved on to to serve as Diocesan President for a period of six years.
Leila was one of the representatives from Guyana at the inauguration of the Provincial Mothers’ Union and was later elected to sit on the executive body as a committee member, then as Public Relations Officer and later as Provincial Vice President. In 2005, she was elected Provincial President, which position she held for two terms.
During her fifty years as a member of the MU, Leila loved producing skits and short plays which were performed by the members of her parish as well as the wider membership. She also wrote the history of the Mothers’ Union in her country Guyana as well as the history of the Mothers’ Union in the province. Both of these have been put to music and are available on CDs.
Leila is married to Lloyd and they have two adult sons and two grandchildren. She spent all of her working life in the field of Education. She continues to worship at St. Philip’s as a Lay Minister.
Leila remains a loyal member of the Mothers’ Union in her diocese, Guyana, and continues to serve as a member of the provincial council and provincial executive.
